MG beats M-P; Arlington tennis stars advance; Lakewood cross country excels

GIRLS SOCCER

Marysville

Marysville Getchell blanked visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Tuesday night 3-0 in Wesco 3A North action. Sofiia Trujillo led the Chargers with a goal and an assist. Freshman Kirsten Crane and sophomore Alana Gomez also scored for MG. Getting assists were Madison Hagglund and Sydney Huestis.

Arlington

Goalie Lexi Miller-Wood made 12 saves to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 shutout over visiting Stanwood Tuesday. Jordan Bartlow led the home team on offense with a goal and two assists. Sister Carly Bartlow added a goal and an assist, and Jersey Heiss scored the other goal.

Lakewood

In 2A action, the Cougars fell to host Lynden Tuesday 2-1. Scoring for Lakewood was Iliana Ramirez, with the assist going to Riley Christensen.

Last Thursday Arlington beat M-P 2-1, and MG beat Stanwood by that same score. Lakewood blanked Mount Baker 6-0.

BOYS TENNIS

BOYS TENNIS

Arlington’s No. 1 singles player, Taras McCurdie, advanced to districts after placing second in the Wesco 3A North tournament at Snohomish High School Wednesday.

McCurdie lost in the final 6-4, 6-0 after winning his semifinal match 0-6, 6-1, 6-2.

M-P’s top singles player, Parker Devereux, just missed state. He won his consolation match 6-2, 6-0, but lost to eventual champion Will MacDonald of Snohomish in the consolation final that would have sent him to state 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Tuesday, McCurdie won his quarterfinal match 6-0, 6-2. Devereux won his opening match 6-1, 6-0 over Liam Perkins of MG, but lost in the quarterfinals 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

His brother, Mason Devereux, who plays for MG, also won his first-round match 6-1, 6-2, but lost in the quarterfinals by that same score and lost his consolation match 6-3, 6-1.

Zack Martian of Arlington lost in the first round 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Ben Nichols-Keaton McBride of Arlington also advanced to districts. They won their consolation match Wednesday 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 then won a really tough consolation semifinal 6-2, 6-7 (3) 7-6 (4) before losing the consolation final 6-4, 6-1. M-P’s doubles team of Aaron Kalab-Treven Southard lost their consolation match 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Tuesday, Nichols-McBride defeated Luke Olason-Mikah Marshall of MG 6-1, 6-1. Kalab-Southard beat Kiel Selapack-Kane Selapack of MG 6-2, 6-1.

Eliminated in the first round were Cooper McBride-Colby King of Arlington, who lost 6-2, 6-4; and Dawson Coe-Jake Sulya of M-P, who lost 6-2, 6-1.

The two local teams then lost in the quarterfinals: Nichols-McBride 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Kalab-Southard 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile M-P had been on a winning streak and Arlington on a losing streak, but that all changed last Thursday as the Eagles beat the Tomahawks 5-2. The Eagles swept the singles competition with McCurdie beating Parker Devereux 6-4, 6-2; Nichols coming from behind to beat Carson Asper 4-6, 6-0, 6-1; Keaton McBride getting by Trae Tingelstad 6-4, 6-4; and Martian defeating Davis Magee 6-2, 6-4. M-P won the first two doubles matches with Kalab-Southard whipping Cooper McBride-Colby King 6-2, 6-0; and Coe-Sulya getting past Nate Metcalf-Jayce Jaubert 7-5, 6-0. Eagles Ty Rusko-Aiden Green then blanked Ethan Alberts-Alex Nyblod 8-0.

VOLLEYBALL

Marysville

Wednesday, M-P lost a hard-fought, back-and-forth match to Everett 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22 and 11-15. Caylee Carter led the offense with 14 kills and 2 blocks. Lawren Rainey added 11 kills. Jenna Olson led the defense with 36 digs. Ayana Sabbas had a strong all-around game with 4 kills, 30 assists and 14 digs. Also, M-P beat MG Tuesday night in 3A Wesco North play 24-26, 25-14, 27-25 and 25-19. Leading the Tommies offense was Madyson Baxter with 8 kills, followed by Carter with 7 and Carly Scallan with 6. Sabbas had 14 assists and 3 service aces, while Taylor Bichel had 8 assists and 3 aces. Olson contributed 1 ace and 31 digs. For the Chargers, Kelsey Kolling had 9 kills and an ace, Kerragyn Heacock 4 kills, 4 aces and 17 digs, Alexus Atkins 3 kills and 3 blocks and Peyton Schmidt with 19 digs.

Meanwhile, Stanwood beat MG 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17 last Thursday. Kolling had 6 kills and 4 digs, Kate Roberts 6 kills, 4 digs and a block, Heacock 4 kills and 7 digs and Hannah Holscher 15 assists and 7 digs.

Arlington

The Eagles beat Stanwood 3-1 last Thursday. Arlington is known for having a handful of powerful hitters, but now they are also showing that power from the back court. The Eagles scored easily and often on their serves in beating M-P in three straight. The Tommies were back on their heels on the defensive and never got their offense on track in losing at Arlington 25-15, 25-15 and 25-11h. Arlington improved to 10-0 while the Tommies dropped to 3-6. Arianna Bilby again led the Eagles with 16 kills and 5 digs. Emily Mekelburg added 8 kills, 2 service aces and 6 digs. Teagan Sutherland contributed 5 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Taylor Pederson had 20 assists, 4 aces and 4 digs. Carly Scallan led M-P with 4 kills while Jenna Olson had 21 digs. A block by Julia Parra and aces by Bilby and Sutherland gave Arlington a 12-7 lead in the first game, and Pederson added another ace to make it 17-12. A kill by Mekelburg followed by two more by Sutherland set up match point. Parra ended it with a quick set kill

Lakewood

The Cougars fell to Lynden 3-0 Tuesday and lost by that same score to Mount Baker last Thursday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lakewood

In the Northwest 2A Championships at Civic Stadium Wednesday, the Cougars placed fifth for the boys and fourth for the girls. Alex Jensen was sixth in the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 8.92 seconds. Gabe Hatch was 13th, Jarron Ransford 33rd, Jesse Stoddard 39th, Joseph Heisley 41st and freshman Matthew Hatch 51st. For the girls, Madison Howe was 18th in 20 minutes, .36 seconds. Callie Buchanan was 20th, Alexa Daily 24th, Jaydee Vargus 31st, Holly Riley 32nd, and Kayla Schueller 52nd.

SWIMMING

At M-P, Devon Keator stood out for the Tommies, winning the diving with 168.06 points. Teammate Kelsey Harris was second with 159.06. Visiting Snohomish won all the other events, taking the team victories 143-33 over M-P and 148-33 over MG. Katelyn Leary was second in the 100 yard backstroke and third in the 200 medley. M-P was third in the 200-yard medley relay, Isabella Bennett of MG third in the 200 free, Lorelei Pringle of MG third in the 100 back, and Maddy Sulya of M-P third in the 100 breaststroke.

Last Thursday, Lake Stevens beat both home team M-P and MG. Kelsey Harris of M-P won the diving with 161.1 points. Tomahawk Katelyn Leary added a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute 6.56 seconds.

FOOTBALL

Marysville

Sophomore fullback Dylan Carson ran for 269 yards and three TDs on 21 carries to lead seventh-ranked M-P to a 42-14 win over Ferndale. Carson, son of head coach Brandon, scored on runs of 7, 80 and 66 yards. Tailback Jordan Justice scored on runs of 47 and 7 yards. He had 8 carries for 80 yards. Meanwhile, MG got by Oak Harbor 20-13 Friday. The home team led 13-7 at halftime, but the visitors held them scoreless in the second half. In the meantime, Caleb Blonk scored from 6-yards out to put the Chargers ahead after the extra point in the third period. Cheron Smith scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth period, and Austin Bryon scored from 41 yards out in the first for MG. The Chargers are 2-5 and the Wildcats 1-5.

Arlington

Jaden Roskelley scored on runs of 32, 20 and 3 yards for the Eagles, 6-1, in their 40-7 win over Everett Friday. Chase Petersen added a receiving score on a 15-yard pass from Trent Nobach, and Gavin Skyles scored on a 10-yard run and Holden Erken on a 51-yard run late in the game.

Lakewood

Cougar QB Jared Taylor threw TDs of 22 and 28 yards to Brayden Boortz in the sixth-ranked Cougars’ 34-16 Northwest 2A Sky Division win over the Blaine Borderites Friday. Taylor added a 27-yard rushing TD for Lakewood, 6-1. Landen Pruitt scored from 5 yards and Malik Dotson from 57 yards in the rout.
