Summertime festivals are a wonderful way to showcase all the great things happening in a community and Arlington took full advantage of that this past weekend when it played host to the annual Arlington Fly-In and celebrated the Street Fair on the revamped Olympic Avenue.
The Fly-In, which ran July 8-12, attracted people from not only the state and region, but also from all over the country.
The Fly-In featured a variety of events including aerobatics demonstrations, military vehicle displays, the Cascade Warbirds, the B-25 Pacific Prowler, a Veterans Appreciation Day, a fireworks show and concert, and lots of vendors and other display booths.
The event is not only a great way to showcase the Arlington Airport, but also a great way to show case Arlington. There were even shuttles running back and forth between the Fly-In and the Street Fair.
The Arlington Street Fair returned in full force, July 11-13, after a one-year hiatus during the Olympic Avenue reconstruction project.
More than 80 vendors were on hand to greet the thousands of people who attended.
Handcrafted items, artwork, photography, pottery and much more were available at the various booths.
There was also lots of entertainment, including the first ever Arlington Idol contest which attracted more than 11 people to Legion Park Friday evening. The new gazebo in Legion Park proved to be a popular venue for the performances.
And while all that the Fly-In and Street Fair had to offer was impressive, the most important thing about them is often overlooked — the dedication, hard work, generosity and commitment of the event organizers, sponsors and volunteers. Without them, these events would not be possible.
While it’s not possible to name them all, they all deserve our thanks and our appreciation. It is because of them that we have these two great opportunities to showcase Arlington and all that makes it such a great place to live.
