EVERETT – Arlington’s girls basketball team won the district title with a 50-34 win over Shorecrest Saturday night at Everett Community College.
They started off slow, but when freshman Jenna Villa hit a 3 midway through the first quarter the Eagles took a 5-3 lead they would never relinquish.
Hailey Hiatt hit a layup and Makenzie Gage scored after grabbing an offensive board to make it 10-7 after one quarter.
Arlington’s defense held Shorecrest to just two second-period points and took a 19-9 halftime lead. Hiatt scored inside and outside, and Allison DeBerry hit a basket to key the effort.
In the third, Villa, Keira Marsh and Hiatt all hit 3’s right away to open up a 28-16 lead. When Hiatt and Gage connected on a back-door play, and Hiatt hit another 3 Arlington was up 33-20 after three periods.
DeBerry sparked the team to start the fourth after being hit hard on a layup, and it still went in, plus she sank the free throw. She scored again and Josey Stupey scored twice, and Villa connected on another 3 to put the game out of reach.
Hiatt led the way with 18 points. DeBerry and Villa added 8 each, Stupey 7, Marsh 5 and Abby Schwark and Gage 2 each. Arlington, seeded No. 3 in the state, next plays No. 6 Lake Washington at noon Saturday at Jackson High School. The winner plays at 7:15 Thursday night at the Tacoma Dome. The loser plays at 3:45 Wednesday, also at the Tacoma Dome.
