Marysville-Pilchuck clinched at least a tie for the Wesco North title with a 64-55 win over Meadowdale Monday night.

The Tomahawks also can thank Shorewood for beating Stanwood 82-79 in overtime. It was the second-straight overtime loss for the Spartans, who fell to Arlington Friday. Stanwood had been undefeated in league and tied for first with M-P before that.

Against Meadowdale, M-P outscored the home team 20-14 in the last quarter to clinch the win.

Luke Dobler led the balanced attack with 17 points. Cameron Stordahl added 14, Ethan Jackson 14 and Aaron Kalab and Elson Battle had 9 each.

Also, junior Malakhi Knight had 37 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists in the Chargers’ 71-52 home win over Archbishop Murphy Monday night. 

ABM was never in the game as MG took a 25-17 lead after one period and expanded that to 42-29 at the break. Josiah Koellmer added 9 points.

Meanwhile, M-P owes Arlington’s boys basketball team some coffees or Red Bulls.

The Eagles pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year Friday, edging Stanwood 64-63 in overtime as sophomore guard Ethan Martin hit a 3-pointer from left of the top of the key with 1.9 seconds remaining.

The Stanwood-Arlington matchup was tight throughout with the home team ahead 31-25 at halftime, but the visitors outscoring them 19-12 in the fourth quarter to tie it at 57-57. Martin keyed that effort with a 3 and some free throws. 

Arlington trailed by four in overtime with 40 seconds left, but Will Abram’s dunk and Stanwood’s two missed free throws set up Martin’s heroics.

Martin led the winners, 9-7, with 21 points. Abram chipped in 12 and Joseph Schmidt 11.

Stanwood fell to 14-3. The loss snapped their 13-game winning streak.

Arlington came back from a 14-point deficit in the game. Ironically they gave up a 17-point lead in a loss two days earlier to M-P.

Wednesday, Arlington beat Oak Harbor 86-54.

Meanwhile, M-P had another tight game Friday but got by MG 61-57.

Two steals and layups by Knight and a 3 by Koellmer tied it at 27-27 at halftime after M-P had taken a lead.

In the third, Stordahl and Knight exchanged 3’s then Austin Townsend scored inside and Koellmer hit another 3 to keep MG close. Kalab scored twice inside and Stordahl hit a deep 3 at the buzzer to put the home team up 47-43 after three periods.

Jackson scored twice inside, but Koellmer connected on another 3 to tie it 53-53 with 2:44 left in the game.

However MG didnt’t score again until it was too late, while Brady Phelps drove it for two, Dobler scored on a back-door play and Kalab hit two free throws to clinch it.

Knight scored 34 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Koellmer added 10 points.

Kalab led the winners with 18 points. Stordahl had 16 and Jackson 14.

Wednesday, MG whipped Snohomish 73-27. Knight and Townsend each had 17 and Koellmer 12.

Knight was named a WIAA Athlete of the Week. In three games he scored 81 points and grabbed 27 rebounds, along with numerous steals, assists and blocked shots.

Knight played in three games for the Chargers versus Shorewood, Stanwood, and Marysville Pilchuck. In game 1, he logged 32 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block, and shoot 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. In game 2, he had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. And in game 3, he put up 34 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

At Lakewood Tuesday, the Cougars lost a heart-breaker to Squalicum on Senior Night 67-65. Lakewood is still in fourth place two games ahead of them in the standings with a 9-3 record. 

The home team raced out to a 10-3 lead after Morgan Stacey scored off the tip-off, Shae Dixon and Jackson Schultz both hit 3’s, and Jared Taylor stole the ball on the full-court press and passed to Dixon for two more.

Jackson connected on another 3, but then the Cougars were held scoreless for four minutes until Dixon scored after grabbing an offensive rebound to give the Cougs a 15-11 first-quarter lead.

Lakewood quit going inside after Squalicum’s 6-7 center Leland Zender blocked a few shots and intimidated a few others and the Cougs went cold from the outside.

Neither team did much to start the second period but Taylor scored on an offensive rebound and assisted to Shae on a fastbreak bucket. Stacey finally hit a 3 and Schultz added another 3 to give the hometeam a 25-22 halftime advantage.

The teams continued to play it close in the second half until the visitors pulled it out at the end.

Saturday, the Cougars raced to a 21-7 first-quarter lead, but Nooksack Valley rallied in the second to cut the margin to 38-35 at the half. The two teams played exactly even in the second half as the visitors won 71—68. Alex Jensen and Stacey led the winners with 19 points each. Dixon contributed 16 and Schultz 10.

Meanwhile, Jensen scored 24 points to lead the Cougars to a 70-45 win at Sehome last Thursday night. Schultz added 8 and Stacey and Blake Conyers 7 each.
