ARLINGTON – The Eagle girls led by 18 points Friday with 2:32 left in the third quarter, but Archbishop Murphy scored 11 straight to make it 59-52 with 6:02 left in the game.
Arlington coach Joe Marsh has a team full of players who took the Eagles to state last year.
But who did they go to? Their freshman standout Jenna Villa.
After making two free throws, Villa posted up inside for the first time all game to put the Eagles back in control. Hailey Hiatt passed to Keira Marsh, the coach’s daughter, for a bucket, then Marsh scored again after a steal. The Eagles finished off the 11-2 run with four free throws, and Hiatt iced the game after driving to the hoop for a basket.
Marsh led the winners with 29 points, and Villa added 13. Josie Stupey scored 9, Hiatt 8 and Makenzie Gage and Hannah Rork 6 each. Sierra Scheppele added 5.
Arlington got off to a 23-14 lead in the first quarter by hitting seven 3s. Villa, Hiatt, Scheppele and Stupey each hit one, and Marsh hit three, including one at the buzzer from NBA-land. The only regular bucket was by Stupey after a Hiatt steal and assist.
ABM had one turnover after another as it couldn’t figure out how to break the Arlington press. ABM’s bigger team hit the offensive boards hard to keep them in it.
Stupey drove in for two then passed to Villa, who not only made the bucket but three free throw, too, after being fouled. After Rork drove in for two and Marsh hit on two more 3’s Villa hit another long 3 from NBA distance to build the lead to 46-27 at the half.
The visitors outscored the home team in the third quarter with two 3s and a drive by Marsh, an old-school 3-point play by Villa after a fastbreak and foul, and another drive by Stupey.
Julia Lucas led the losers with 19.
Tuesday, Marsh scored 28 to lead the Eagles to a 76-27 win over visiting Everett. Stupey added 11.
Monday, Hiatt connected on 7 of 11 three-pointers for a game high 22 as the Eagles demolished visiting Lynnwood 79-33. Arlington took a 23-7 first-quarter lead and coasted from there. Rork tallied 14, Allison DeBerry 11 and Schepple 10.
On Thursday, tied at 23 in the third quarter, the Eagles went on a 14-2 run then held host Edmonds-Woodway without a field goal in the last quarter on the way to a 60-34 romp. Villa scored 8 of her 11 points in the third. Sophomore Marsh led the team with 15.
MARYSVILLE
Tuesday, M-P lost to Snohomish 61-9, with Lauren Lewis leading the way with 4.
MG came away with a 40-34 win at home against Edmonds-Woodway Friday. Maddie Grandbois led the winners with 20 points. Alexus Atkins added 10 in the upset, which dropped E-W to 7-6. It was only the home team’s second win of the season.
M-P fell to Cedarcrest Friday 64-22. Madyson Baxter had 8.
MG had a hard time finding the basket in the first and third quarters, scoring only 4 points in each, on its way to a 43-35 loss to Archbishop Murphy Thursday. Grandbois was the only Charger in double figures with 14.
Also Thursday, M-P was thrashed by Meadowdale 72-22 with Baxter scoring 12 for the Tomahawks.
LAKEWOOD
Tuesday, the Cougars lost to Anacortes 59-24.
