MARYSVILLE – Marysville-Pilchuck beat Edmonds-Woodway 73-60 Dec. 21, while Marysville Getchell beat Cedarcrest Dec. 20 72-62.
MG, however, lost at home against Anacortes Dec. 21 59-52.
The Tommies relied on sharp ball movement and cleaning up on the defensive boards in taking down E-W.
Aaron Kalab scored inside after assists from Brady Phelps and Cameron Stordahl to tie it at 7-7. Phelps assisted to Treven Southard then Stordahl scored twice – once after an offensive rebound and another with an assist from Ethan Jackson – as M-P took a 15-9 lead after one quarter.
T.J. Severn hit a 3 to start the second quarter then Stordahl passed to Jackson for another bucket. Luke Dobler assisted to Kalab and Stordahl for two more baskets. After Stordahl connected on a runner, Jackson passed to Kalab for two and then Kalab assisted Jackson, whose short left-handed hook made it 33-23 at halftime.
The teams played fairly even from there as M-P won by 13.
Against Anacortes, the visitors clamped down on MG’s top scorers late in the game in pulling out the win.
Josiah Koellmer’s layup put the home team up 34-33 in the third. His 3 from deep in the corner and Malakhi Knight’s score off an inbounds play made it 41 all after three periods.
Koellmer’s drive and two 3’s, followed by Knight’s offensive rebound, put the Chargers up 52-49 with 1:42 to play. But MG couldn’t score the rest of the game, while while Anacortes hit two open 3’s and four free throws.
The Chargers were outscored 18-11 in the final period of the non-league game. Knight had 20 and Koellmer 18.
The previous night at home, MG beat Cedarcrest 72-62. Knight scored 34 points, Koellmer 13 and Austin Townsend 10. Knight scored his 1,000th career point in the game.
Boys wrestling
MG lost a close one to Shorewood Dec. 19. At 285 pounds, Erick Duenes won an exciting match 3-1 in overtime. After a couple of forfeit wins, Jacob Steele won 2-1 at 120 pounds to give the Chargers a big early lead. Cody Mitchell won by pin in 2 minutes, 54 seconds at 132 pounds. But the home team won the next five matches, four by pin, to go in front. At 182 pounds, Anatoliy Bay stopped the bleeding with a pin in 3:14, but a loss by pin in the next match clinched the victory for Shorewood. Cheron Smith of MG won by pin in 55 seconds to close out the match.
In a tourney at Squalicum Dec. 21, M-P was fifth as a team. Placing were: 1. Austin Davis at 126 pounds; 5. Iakov Bondar, at 138; 1. Cayden White, at 182; 5. Kamiakin Craig, at 195; and 3. Justin Albee, 285.
Girls basketball
M-P lost to Edmonds Woodway 70-14 Dec. 19. Imajine Moses scored 6.
MG fell to Cedarcrest 47-30 Dec. 20. Maddy Grandbois had 10 for the Chargers.
