Arlington 2nd at own girls tourney; Jensen breaks Lakewood record; Eagle VB coach to EvCC

ARLINGTON – The Eagles finished second out of 27 teams in their first girls-only wrestling tournament Saturday.

Everett won with 196 points. Arlington had 146, Lakewood was 14th with 66, and Marysville’s combined team scored 63 to place 15th.

Called the Highway 9 Championships, Torrie Blackwood of Lakewood stood out among the locals. The junior pinned all four of her opponents in less than 2 minutes to place first in the 120-pound weight class.

Also, freshman Alivia White of Marysville was the champion at 190 pounds.

Three other locals placed in a tie for third: At 135 pounds, Tailer Cochran of Arlington; at 145 pounds, Anika Garner of Marysville; and at 235 pounds, Brianna Williams-Bales of Arlington.

Seven local girl wrestlers finished in a tie for fifth in their respective weight classes. They are: at 105 pounds, Taylor Chapman of Arlington; at 110 pounds, Emma Kramer of Lakewood; at 115 pounds, Kiara Jones of Arlington; at 145 pounds Angela Reed of Lakewood; at 170 pounds Souzanna Crew of Arlington tied for fifth with teammate Ashleigh Bergstrom; and at 235 pounds Elizabeth Aleo of Lakewood tied for fifth.

LAKEWOOD

Boys basketball

Alex Jensen became the Cougars’ all-time leading scorer with 31 points in an 88-72 win over Mount Baker Friday.

He has 1,115 points in his career. He is also Lakewood’s all-time leader in steals with 180. He had four steals in the game, along with six assists and six rebounds.

He broke the 14-year record of his coach, Anthony Wiederkehr, who graduated from LHS in 2006 and played at Western Washington University.

Jackson Schultz added 18 points and Shae Dixon 13. The Cougars rallied for 30 points in the third quarter to break the contest open.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stacey scored 22 points and Jensen 13 to lead the Cougars to a 79-51 whipping at home against Burlington-Edison Monday.

Leading just 12-9 after one period, Lakewood’s offense slipped into high gear to take a 42-24 halftime lead, and they cruised from there with 13 players getting in the game, 10 of them scoring.

ARLINGTON

Volleyball

Coach Whitney Williams has been hired by Everett Community College.

Williams spent six seasons at her alma matter going 97-35 with three Wesco 3A championships and two state berths, including sixth at state this year.

Williams takes over for Dmitriy Tukan, who went 6-20 this year. EvCC has finished last four-straight years with a 12-106 record.

Boys wrestling

The Eagles lost to Everett 47-24 at Snohomish Thursday. At 106 pounds, AJ Dorschak got Arlington off to a good start with an exciting 7-5 overtime win. At 120, Carsten Tollenaar won by pin and at 126 Dorian Tollenaar won by forfeit. At 138, Trevor Latta won a close 8-6 decision and at 145 Dimitri Shaffer won by pin. But the Seagulls won the next seven matches to take the victory.

Saturday at Snohomish, Arlington was 10th in a big tournament. Dorian Tollenaar took first at 120 pounds; and Eric Vogel tied for third at 113 pounds; as did Latta at 138 pounds.

Boys basketball

Arlington outscored visiting Shorewood 19-8 in the second quarter and went on to win at home Friday 78-63. Sophomore guard Ethan Martin scored 23 points, 10 in that decisive quarter, to lead the victors, while Joseph Schmidt scored 18. Ten of the 13 Eagles who played scored.

Girls basketball

At Shorewood, the Eagles took a 22-4 first-period lead and cruised to a 63-36 victory Friday. Jenna Villa had 15, Josie Stupey 13, Hailey Hiatt 12 and Sierra Scheppele 10 to lead the balanced attack.

Boys wrestling

MG beat Oak Harbor 58-12, but was edged by Stanwood 40-36 Thursday at home. In the win, Cody Mitchell won 8-4 at 132 pounds, followed by Joel Foster pinning his foe at 138 in 3 minutes, 17 seconds. John Allen then won by pin in 3:02 at 145, Jesus Cabadas won by pin in 2:35 at 152 and at 170 Andrew Cantu won an exciting match 11-9. Anatolity Bay then won by pin in 1:53 at 182 and at 195 Caleb Blonk won a major decision 11-2. At 220, Erick Duenas won by pin in 1:43, Omar Salcedo won by pin in 4:30 at 106 and Jacob Steele and Igor Shabalov both won by forfeit at 113 and 120. Against Stanwood, Foster won 6-1, Cabadas won by pin in a super fast 29 seconds and Cantu won by forfeit. Bay took a close match 9-7, and Duenas won by pin in 1:42. At 285, Cheron Smith won by pin in 5:20. But Stanwood won the next four matches to take the victory before Mitchell won by forfeit at 132 pounds. Meanwhile, Marysville-Pilchuck beat Everett 42-30 at Snohomish Thursday. At 113 pounds, Preston Phillips won by pin, at 126 Austin Davis eked out an 8-6 win and at 138 Iakov Bondar won by pin. At 145, Ammar Humoud won by forfeit and at 160 Andon Merrick won by pin. At 170, Mauro Bejar won by a 10-5 decision, and Cayden White won by pin at 182 pounds. At 195, Kamiakin Craig took a 9-6, decision and at 285 Justin Albee won by pin.

At Sultan High School Saturday, MG was fourth. Salcedo won the 106-pound weight class; Steele tied for third at 113; Christopher Bonner tied for third at 160; as did Duenes at 220; Smith was second at 285 pounds.

Boys basketball

MG held visiting Lynnwood to just 3 points in the first quarter, while scoring 17 of their own, on the way to a 76-51 thrashing Saturday.

Malakhi Knight led the winners with 30 points, making 13 of 18 shots. He added nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Alex Owens had 14 and Josiah Koellmer 11.

M-P beat Shorecrest 57-53 Friday.

Swimming

M-P was 23rd and MG 32nd at a huge swim meet at the King County Aquatic Center Saturday. Andrew Kallio placed sixth in diving for the Tommies.

Girls basketball

Marysville Getchell got off to an extremely slow start in falling to Lynnwood Thursday 47-38. The visiting Chargers fell behind 14-2 in the first quarter in the loss. Maddy Grandbois scored 22 points for the losing team.

M-P lost to Shorecrest 62-11 Friday. Lauren Lewis scored 5.
